Valley of Fire 4-25-09 – 4-26-09

The following where taken on an overnight trip to Valley of Fire State Park North of Las Vegas. on 4-25-09 & 4-26-09.

Red Tail Hawk. I climbed up to the top of one of the taller sandstone formations near where we were camped & saw a silhouette off in the distance towards the other end of the formation and was dissapointed that I wasn’t the only person up there…. then of course I realized that it was some type or other of Raptor & started trying to sneak around and get a good picture of it.

Red Rock Canyon NCA – Las Vegas NV – 4-11-09

Most any Las Vegas area resident would be familiar with Red Rock Canyon, specifically ‘Calico Tanks’ within Red Rock, but they may not realize how many truly beautiful sights there are to see even in just one afternoon. Here in southern Nevada spring is well under way and many of the wildflowers in in full bloom, there have also been a few rain storms here and there which bring, aside from water, other life and bath the desert in different gradients of light & shadow than you would not be likely to see other times of year. I tried to capture all of these things in the following photos. Enjoy.

Death Valley Wildflower Photos – 2009

In very fortunate years, Death Valley gets enough rain through winter & early spring to spawn a wild flower boom that in typical years simply wouldn’t happen. The last BIG boom was in 2005 which on a scale of 1 to 10 would have rated a 9 or a 10. This year seems to be peaking at around a 5 (not too bad). So I decided to take a trip and see what I could find. I didn’t get the opportunity to photograph nearly as many of these great flowers as I would have liked to, nor did I get to spend nearly as much time in Death Valley or go to as many places as I wanted too… But I can’t complain I suppose as I wasn’t the one driving. Better luck next time I guess. I think I did manage to come up with some pretty good shots though. Enjoy! (I will be posting more non-wild flower shots from this trip to Death Valley later on.)

For some reason Most of the pictures of ‘purple’ flowers I took that day didn’t come out very well, this ones about it, I don’t think the auto-focus on my camera likes purple or something! lol

Lots of yellow flowers like these as well as others. Maybe not the most spectacular, but still very nice.

This seems rather unusual, I didn’t see any others like this around. It may be that there are more at higher elevations (I was fairly near the valley floor)

Certainly not he most stunning wild flower you will ever see, but keep in mind, it’s Death Valley. (There are many others including Reds & Purples, of which I didn’t really have much time to seek out.)

Even the Lowly Creosote bush puts on a show with the right spring weather in Death Valley!

Would have really like to see more of this one, esp. fully open. Shot this one right down at Badwater (The lowest point in N. America). It was just up the slope just off of the salt flat.

This little one was maybe between two & three inches tall. I hardly noticed them at first and just about stepped on this one.
